Now, besides variations in style and cuts, garment
manufacturers worldwide have begun using innovative and designer
textiles or fabrics. And hence, today, we have got designer
garments made of designer fabrics. Even the textiles used in
home-furnishing items such as bed-sheets, sofa-covers, curtains
have become designer in nature. All these have led to a spurt
in the demand for textile designers whose employment so far
has been restricted to the textile manufacturing units only.
Seventy percent of the materials of any designer garment is
related to the textiles. Till now, experiments have been limited
to cut, styles and embellishments. Now there is a growing demand
for innovations with the textiles. JD Institute of Fashion Technology,
New Delhi, has got courses in textile designing at its Bangalore
and Mumbai centre as well. Surface designing of the fabrics
has become a very important aspect in today's fashion and thus
has enhanced the importance of textile designers. By changing
the structure of the fibre and also through producing some furnishing
effect on the yarn and fibre, textile designers produce a range
of scintillating fabrics which are forming the core of designer
garment of today.
Textile designing encompass activities related to dyeing and
printing of the fabric and also the surface designing on it.
Though Indian weavers are exceptionally talented and produce
wonderful fabrics, they have not been able to make a mark in
the profession as they are not aware of the latest production
techniques and in-vogue trends worldwide.
As far as training courses in the field is concerned, NIFT provides
a two-year post-graduate diploma course at its New Delhi, Calcutta
and Bangalore centres. Those with 50% marks at graduation
level examination are eligible for the course. It also provides
a one-year part time certificate course in the field, for which
a +2 qualification along with some some experience in the field
is the minimum qualification.
National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad too provides
a comprehensive textile designing course. Some other institutes
are also imparting professional training in the field, including
the International Institute of Fashion Technology.
Though a formal educational qualification is required, a little
creativity, color sense and knowledge of chemistry is also important
for those who want to pursue a career in the field. Once professionally
qualified, these designers get employment with textile design
studios, textile and garment manufacturing units, buying houses
and exporters in the field of made-ups, apparel, furnishing,
and upholstery, beside textile mills. As for the remuneration,
those with a two-year course could well start with a minimum
salary of rupees six to seven thousand per month. However, for
those from NIFT and NID it is much higher, from
Rs 15,000 to even 25,000!. Are you listening folks?
