Ancient India was called Golden India. So rich was the
country, so famed were Indian jewellers! And Indian jewellery
designs were in demand the world over.
They still are in demand and jewellery designing has become
a sought after profession. Nita Rai's foray into jewellery
designing began about eight years ago.
Though initially she trained to be an interior designer, she
took up jewellery designing for the 'sheer pleasure' and
'sense of achievement' that the work gave her. Nita has
been designing jewellery for New Delhi's elite, but, thanks
to her husband's job, cosmopolitan Bangalore now has the opportunity
to see the display of semi-precious, precious stones, silver,
gold and pearl jewellery, which are part of an exclusive collection
designed by her.
"I usually hold exhibitions at home," says
Nita, but she has also held exhibitions with Air France,
Lufthansa and British Airways. "My passion for pearls
made me get into this profession. Nowadays in Bangalore, there
is a greater demand for gold, silver, precious and semi-precious
stones. So, I've started using these too," she says.
"The demand for fashion jewellery
designers is growing, as people like to wear trendy, unique
designs. My
jewellery pieces could cost anywhere between Rs 500 - Rs 20,000,"
Nita elaborates.
Nita graduated in jewellery designing from the J D Institute
of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. She gives a lot of importance
to the 'appeal' and the final
'get-up' of a piece. Her jewellery is wearable in the
sense that it is light, comfortable and caters to modern tastes.
Her designs are both contemporary and ethnic, and at times,
a blend of the two. She also redesigns traditional, 'chunky'
jewellery to make it more wearable.
According to Nita, Bangaloreans prefer a combination
of gold and silver, where each metal has its own identity. She
is planning to have an exhibition soon for 'Holi'. This
will be something that the fashion conscious city will look
forward to. There will be unusual jewellery items on sale and
you could become the envied owner of a "one and only"
piece. That's cool! So, look out for Nita's next
exhibition!
