The joyous festival of Raksha Bandhan celebrates the wonderful bond of love between a sister and a brother. Rakhi, as it is otherwise called, falls in the month of Shravan Poornima and occurs on a full moon and this year it falls on the ninth of August. 'Raksha' means protection and 'Bandhan' means bond. It is a ritual where a sister wishes her brother success and happiness. The brother in turn pledges to love, honour and protect her.

On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the sister's day begins with an early morning bath. Then she adorns herself in her finest clothes and awaits her brother. On his arrival, she applies vermilion and saffron on his forehead and ties a rakhi on his right wrist. She then offers sweets to her brother. The brother shows his love and affection by offering a gift of money and pledging to protect her. Then both of them partake of the traditional dishes that are prepared specially for this occasion - a type of puri and vermicelli pudding.

Where can sisters find rakhis…
On the special occasion of Raksha Bandhan a one-stop shop to buy rakhis, puja thalis, chawal kumkum sets and beautiful greeting cards are Archies Greetings and Gifts Limited. But for those looking for a mind-boggling range of rakhis, just take a stroll down Avenue Road off Kempegowda Road, Majestic. Rakhis range from small, simple ones in muted colours to large, flamboyant ones. Those with the money even have silver rakhis made to order.

What can brothers gift their sisters…
The rakhi gift for a sister means loads of fun. If you wish to give her money, she has the freedom to buy what she wishes.

When distance separates a brother and a sister, the rakhi is sent by post a few days prior to the festival. And now, of course, we have the e-rakhi. A sister can send a lovely rakhi to her brother anywhere in the world with the click of a mouse. Brother's box of sweets can be delivered in just the same way. And, hey presto, distances cease to exist.
